The Verbal only impacts yourself. This is predominantly so that others know you're only performing actions that impact you alone, but saying 'by self' would be grammatically awkward. From the Core rules:

This trait indicates that the effect works only on the person using it. Instead of saying "by" you would say "to Self" after the effect. This indicates that you are the only target of the called effect.

The most common usages are abilities that grant you (and only you) defenses, or times when you divert healing abilities onto yourself rather than allies.

Some players - particularly in the heat of the moment - may omit the "to self" part of their verbal due to any of the following:

  • Attempts to avoid noise pollution in large battles
  • Forgetfulness
  • Expediting calls during battle
  • Feeling that it is readily apparent that they are not applying the effect to anyone else. This is particularly true in instances of self healing, where the healer might touch their own torso and say the healing call quietly without making eye contact with others.

Dropping the "to self" verbal is colloquial and may vary from one Accelerant game to the next, or even from one in-game Team to the next.
