This page contains summaries and examples of mechanics relating to Spirit and Spirit forms. For verbatem quotes from the offical rules regarding Spirit mechanics, see the Core Rules section towards the end of this document.

Spirit OverviewEdit

Spirits are characters and/or NPCs who are temporarily between life and death and can't be interacted with normally. Like traditional fantasy concepts around "ghosts", a creature or player who is Spirit is insubstantial and therefor doesn't interact normally with the world around them. Game rules provide several restrictions on what a player can and can't do while in Spirit form, as well as what other players may do to them.

Types of SpiritsEdit

Deceased PlayersEdit

The most straight forward type of Spirit. These are players who have reached the end of their Five Minute Count after becoming dead and failing to receive some sort of restorative game ability to reverse their death. They are on their way to the Death Area. On their way, other players can attempt to use game abilities to try and restore them, communicate with them, or otherwise interact with the player per the Core Rules regarding spirit interactions.

NPCsEdit

There are two types of NPC spirits:

  1. An NPC may take the form of Spirit to discourage players from interacting with them. Very often this is because the NPC is:
    • Dead and stepping away from the fight. (They might return again later as a "new" version of the thing that perished)
    • Are able to temporarily assume Spirit form due to a game ability or due to the nature of the encounter itself
    • Retreating from an encounter that has concluded
    • On their way to help with an encounter somewhere else in the event site
    • Escorting other players to an encounter using a Gate
  2. NPCs may appear as representations of actual spirits of the deceased or spirits of a force (such as a spirit of nature). The Spirit of a character, ancestor, or other being might appear and interact with players (maliciously or otherwise). It is important to note that in many cases players will need to take some specific actions or have specific game abilities to interact with the Spirit NPC.

Temporary Spirit FormEdit

Several game abilities allow a player to temporarily become a Spirit without losing any Vitality. When this happens, the player is like a Spirit in all ways with one exception: they don't have to go to the Death Area. Each ability that grants this effect has stipulations concerning how long the person may be in Spirit form, and how they may interact with other players or the environment. It may specify that they must stand in one place, or move only a certain distance, or only assume the Spirit form under certain circumstances or in certain locations.

The "Spirit" VerbalEdit

When another PC or NPC responds "Spirit" it means that they are in Spirit form and cannot communicate with you unless you have a game ability that allows you to. Even if you do have such an ability, they still might not communicate.

Core RulesEdit

Character DeathEdit

After 5 minutes of death, a dead character becomes a spirit of the dead. Your spirit and everything you still carry is drawn to a special area of the game marked as a Death area. Your spirit will even pick up your own weapons if they are within reach unless someone else possesses them. When you rise as a spirit you must proceed directly to the Death area. You must walk with your head bowed and your arms at your side. You cannot interact with any other character unless they use an ability that allows you to do so. You cannot drop items. You cannot use any game ability. If someone tries to interact with you, reply "Spirit" and continue on your way.

Spirits of the DeadEdit

While you are a spirit of the dead, there are very few effects that will work on you. The only effects that will work are effects with "to Spirit" or "to Dead" in the verbal. These are Bane effects specifically designed to affect spirits. The most common is a "Speak to Dead" effect. This type of "Speak" effect will allow you to converse quietly with the character who used the effect. You cannot stray from your path or use any game skill while talking. You are not compelled to communicate, but you may do so. Other effects might include "Imbue to Spirit" and "Inflict to Spirit." If the description on the Effect Card states that it works on a Spirit of the Dead then you must follow the instructions given therein. You may use Resist and Purge defenses while you are a spirit of the dead if they are appropriate for an attack that strikes or affects you.

Spirit Rules and RestrictionsEdit

Characters who have died and are traveling to the Realm of Death are spirits. If you gain the Spirit trait because you have died and you have become a Spirit of the Dead then you also gain the Dead trait. Effects with the trait "to Spirit" affect all spirits, while effects with the trait "to Dead" affect only spirits of the dead. You must walk with your head bowed and your hands at your side.

Some abilities allow a living character to become a spirit for a time, but these abilities usually have special restrictions or will not be absolute in their protection. You might gain a trait and become vulnerable to attacks with that trait even though you are a spirit. Some of these skills last until you move. In these cases you cannot move or speak without ending the effect. If you turn into a spirit in a place which blocks a portal or doorway then you are forced to move to allow someone through. Since this can end the effect you must be careful to use these types of skills so as to not block confined areas.
